I love this subversion of the scary quid-pro-quo identity politics Americans fall into so reflexively.

You wouldn't choose a brain surgeon or a defense lawyer based on whether you'd enjoy having a beer with them. You'd choose the person who is most qualified, whose professional integrity you trust.

And that's how we should vote for our politicians -- according to how well they can understand and articulate our concerns, analyze obstacles, organize others and act with efficacy and ethicality -- not according to whether we'd feel comfortable having them over for a potluck.
