Arresting journalists as well as protestors at the RNC?

9/1/08

Hattip to BrewedFreshDaily, who tweeted "Amy Goodman of Democracy Now was arrested in St. Paul today. They're arresting JOURNALISTS now. Seriously. "

Follow along with video footage at The Daily Kos, Feministing and TheUptake.

UPDATE 9/3/08:

"Goodman has been charged with interfering with the administration of a police officer, and her two producers, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, face felony riot charges. They were all three released from jail after a few hours."

That's from Amy Goodman's arrest: When journalists are the story, by Marisa Helms on MinnPost.com. Helms' is a good account of what happened Monday outside the RNC in St. Paul.

It floors me that Amy Goodman was arrested. As far as I know there's no law against being overly earnest and lacking a sense of humor.

It shows just how vulnerable Pacifica Radio is. Never in a thousand years would they have arrested Terry Gross or Ketzel Levine.

Editorial comment: Snort!

My sense is that Radio Pacifica doesn't have much of a national profile -- and whether that sentence should be followed by the adverb "yet" or "anymore," I'm not sure. Their infamous internal disagreements over past 5 years hasn't done their national image any good, don't you think?

It really puts the hair up on the back of my neck when I hear about something like this. I also remember seeing (MSNBC? CNN?) live coverage of a reporter who was stationed outside a hotel during the DNC. There was a meeting going on with large contributors and the reporter was trying to find out who they were. It was unclear if the hotel called the police or the Dems but he was also roughed up a bit (you could see it on tv) and arrested.

I shudder to think what kind of precedence this type of thing sets.
